Sils Ceramics

Artist Statement:

Kirsten Schiel is the the artist behind Sils Ceramics. Her studio is located in her home town of Salt Lake City, which is wonderfully close to mountains and various desert landscapes that serve as her inspiration for most of the forms, colors, and designs in her artwork.

Kirsten Schiel stumbled upon a ceramics class by chance during her high school years. The versatility of clay immediately fascinated her, as she found herself mesmerized by the countless ways she could shape, build, and design using such a primal combination of sediment and water.

Her passion for working with clay led her to Utah State University, where she was surrounded by fellow artists who aspired to manipulate the form of clay in limitless ways. However, it wasn't until she completed her studies in collegiate ceramics that she truly discovered her profound love for clay in its humble state. She adored the presence of fingerprints, the rough texture, and the subtle imperfections that told the story of the maker's touch.

In a world heavily influenced by mass production, Kirsten believes that society is lacking genuine physical connections and objects that possess both a story and practical use. Ceramic art, in its essence, offers a tangible connection between individuals, bridging the unintended gap created by technology. Kirsten is wholeheartedly dedicated to this mission and hopes that others will also appreciate the significance of this art form.
